Some Construction Notes - Simplicity 7082

If you think you are a bit retentive about your sewing, I sure am, you should check out the guys who are trying to dress like Jack Sparrow.
Every bit of the most tiny detail is discussed at length on forums full of pictures with video explanations and how-to's. So I would like to thank the guys for all the information they make available when I was making decisions about the pocket flaps or the number of buttons I needed to complete the coat. If you are having a Jack moment in your sewing, you can refer to Yordreem, SithCamaro and the guys on the Keep The Code message board for a boatload of information. I do dig you guys!

I made few changes to the pattern, the pocket flaps for one as I thought the patterned ones were too cartoon-like, I made real pockets in fact (and I used this tutorial to cut the. I added the requisite amount of mock buttonholes on the back vent (12 more buttons!) and on the front, I cheated my way out of hand embroidery by using the bee stitch on my machine. I spent most of my time on reinforcement as some serious swashbuckling will take place. I made a full lining which you saw the other day, and took some time to secure it in key points with little loops. 

The frock is not "screen accurate", but it'll be solid. I am spray painting the buttons today. Nicolas is coming Friday morning to pick it up so I better get to it!

Les plus infimes détails sont discutés et analysés longuement sur des forums avec pléthore de photos, vidéos et tutoriels. J'en profite d'ailleurs pour les remercier parce que quand il fallait prendre des décisions sur les poches ou sur le nombre exact de boutons Yordreem, SithCamaro et le forum de Keep The Code m'ont donné une cargaison pleine d'infos. J'ai fait quelques changements au patron. J'aimais pas les rabats que je trouvait trop caricaturaux (en fait j'ai fait de vraies poches) et j'ai utilisé le tutoriel de Kathleen Fasanella pour les couper et ils sont super beaux. J'ai ajouté le nombre requis de fausses boutonnières à l'arrière (12 boutons de plus!) et au devant que j'ai réalisées avec l'aide du point d'abeille de ma machine. J'ai surtout mis plein de renforts partout parce que il va y avoir de la sérieuse fanfaronnade. J'ai fait une doublure complète que vous avez déjà vue et j'ai pris le temps de tout bien la sécuriser avec des petites brides pour pas que ça bouge dans les endroits stratégiques. 

La redingote n'est pas exactement comme celle de Jack, mais elle est solide. Je peins les boutons aujourd'hui.  Nicolas vient la chercher vendredi, j'y vais, il faut que je m'active!

CSI / Les Experts - Simplicity 7082

J'ai lu à quelque part en faisant la recherche sur la teinture au thé qu'il y avait un risque que des vieilles taches refassent leur apparition. J'utilise de vieux draps et la question que je me pose, c'est ils sont où les Experts? Je regarde trop la télévision!

Strange Brew - Simplicity 7082

I am making a Jack Sparrow costume! And no it's not for Halloween, it's going to be used in a cape and sword show.

I am using Simplicity 7082 as a base pattern, but I have to strengthen the whole thing so Nicolas can actually fight with it, wash it, weather it and make it look like the real Jack Sparrow frock coat which is fully lined and has functioning button holes and pockets. The budget is limited, so trying to find ways to save money, I used old thrifted sheets and tea dyed them to achieve that dirty beige weathered look.

Yesterday, I made a strange brew and left the lining to seep overnight. Now I can add cooking to my sewing skills!

The buttons are especially hard to find at a reasonable cost so I bought a lot of really nice mismatched ones in several thrift shops, but they are too shiny, anyone anywhere has a suggestion on how to make them duller?
