Je vous présente Miuccia.

J'ai vu Séverine de Cousu Main pendant les vacances de Pâques qui ont lieu en mai, c'est une particularité française étrange à laquelle je ne m'habitue pas, et à part manger du poisson frais et aller faire un tour chez Un Chat Sur Un Fil, on a discuté machine à coudre. Je savais que je devais bientôt rendre la Singer et sa pauvre machine, dont je ne me rappelle plus la marque, avait déjà fait 3 allez-retour chez le réparateur pour la même panne. Donc, assises sur un banc, devisant devant des parc à huîtres dans le Golfe du Morbihan on s'est rendu compte qu'on avait des vues sur la même, la Janome Memory Craft 6600 Pro. J'ai pris ça comme un signe que c'était bien la machine à coudre qu'il me fallait, si c'est bon pour elle, c'est bon pour moi n'est-ce pas? C'est un signe difficile à expliquer à un banquier, dixit Severine, mais en fait, j'avais économisé pour ça alors il n'a pas été surpris.

J'avais vu plein de Janome chez des copines, La Couture Rose a une 6500, Carolyn de chez Diary of A Sewing Fanatic a une 6600 et vient tout juste de se racheter une 8900, Renée à Montréal en a une, Anne de chez Clothing Engineer a une 6500 depuis 10 ans et toutes m'ont dit le plus grand bien de leur machines.  Ensuite j'ai lu quelques critiques au hazard sur Pattern Review et aucune d'entre elle n'était négative. Un autre signe.

J'ai tout de suite compris pourquoi quand j'ai ouvert la boîte et que je l'ai mise en route. Depuis, comme je le disait sur Instagram l'autre jour, je lui cherche des poux et je n'en trouve pas. 

Trépignant en attendant son arrivée, j'ai coupé la robe Eté Indien du Vicomte de Boisjoly (rubrique Patrons de Fouture à gauche), un petit patron gratuit bien sympa dont je vais vous reparler et je me suis mise à l'ouvrage, essayant le pied à double-entrainement, les boutonnières, la genouillère, des pieds spéciaux, des pieds normaux, avec ou sans table. J'ai essayé de la soie, du jeans, de la viscose, du simili, du cuir, elle n'a pas bronché. Elle est silencieuse, solide, rapide, souple, j'ai beau chercher, je ne lui trouve pas de défaut. Rien, aucun pou. Elle n'a pas de bras libre, mais je n'ai pas utilisé de bras libre depuis Mathusalem donc pour moi ce n'était pas un obstacle à son achat.

Je pense que c'est le début d'une belle histoire d'amour. Je vais aller couper du tissu, j'ai quelques petits trucs à lui murmurer à l'oreille.

Meet Miuccia.

I saw Severine (French Sewing Bee finalist like me) during the Easter break in May, this is a French quirk I still can't get used to, and besides eating fresh fish and dropping by Un Chat Sur Un Fil, we talked sewing machines. I knew I was about to send back the Singer and her machine, can't remember the brand, had already been to the repair shop 3 times for the same issue. So, sitting on a bench, looking over the oyster parks in the Golfe du Morbihan we realized that we both wanted the same, a Janome Memory Craft 6600 Pro. I took it as a sign that it was indeed the perfect machine, what's good for her is good for me, right? Right! Severine joked that it's the kind of sign that is hard to explain to your banker, but in fact I had been saving up for it, so he wasn't surprised.

I follow quite a few Janome owners, La Couture Rose has one, Carolyn at Diary of a Sewing Fanatic has one and just bought a 8900, Renée from Montréal has one, Anne of Clothing Engineer has a 10 year old 6500 which she loves. Then I cherry picked a few reviews on PR and could not find a single negative comment. Another sign.

I understood why as soon as I opened up the box and set it up. As I was saying on Instagram the other day, I really want to nitpick but can't.

I couldn't wait for the machine to get here, in the meantime, I cut an Ete Indien dress, a pretty free pattern from Le Vicomte du Boisjoly (under Patrons de Fouture on the left) which I am going to talk about at a later date and set to work.

I tried the double feed, the buttonholes, the knee lift, special feet, normal foot with or without the extension table. I have sewn, silk, jean, viscose, leatherette and leather she didn't bat an eye. She is quiet, solid, swift and flexible. I really nitpicked, couldn't find anything bad to say, nothing, nada. She doesn't have a free arm, but I haven't used a free arm since the Middle Ages so that didn't influence my decision.

I think it's the start of a long love story. I'm going to go and cut some fabric, I have a few things to whisper in her ear.

Good Bye Honey / Au Revoir Ma Chérie

Mon année avec la Singer Futura 4060 (connue dans les reste du monde sous le nom de Quantum Stylist) est terminée.

Je vous avais expliqué les modalités de ce partenariat informel l'année dernière. 

J'ai vécu un an avec une peur panique de l'abimer. Ceci dit, il est bien possible que ce soit parce qu'on me la prêtait et que j'avais peur de ne pas la rendre en une seule pièce, parce que je suis comme ça, quand on me prête des trucs, j'y fais attention et, en France, elle est vendue extrêmement cher. Alors j'ai cousu lentement et doucement toute l'année.

J'ai vraiment essayé de l'aimer mais malgré ses prestations haut de gamme, la 4060 n'est pas pour moi. J'ai besoin d'une machine solide qui ne tremble pas sous les coups d'accélérateurs et les épaisseurs nombreuses. Je préfère les machines au bâti solide. Tout ce plastique m'a déstabilisé. 

C'est pas que c'est une mauvaise machine, elle serait parfaite pour Armelle que j'ai habillé dans la finale de Cousu Main elle coud épisodiquement et elle apprécierait toutes les options. Mon utilisation est beaucoup trop intensive.  

Mais, ce fut un excellent test et j'ai été conquise par les possibilité offertes par une machine électronique alors que je doutais avant. 

Ce fut une belle année pleine de jolies créations cousues lentement (ça a fait du bien après l'émission hihi!) et l'occasion pour moi de bien cerner mes besoins en terme de besoins et d'utilisation. 

Le livreur est venu la prendre ce matin.

My year of sewing with a Singer Futura 4060 (known in the rest of the world as a Quantum Stylist) is over and it's been interesting.

I have already explained the nature of this unwritten partnership last year. 

I have lived a year with a panic-like fear of breaking it. This may be because it was lent to me and I was afraid to give it back in several pieces, I'm like that you know, when I borrow stuff I am extremely careful and this one in France is extremely expensive. So I threaded carefully (whooo a pun!) all year.

I really tried to love it, but even with all the pretty buttons and do-dads, the Futura is not for me. I need to feel power and strength when I put the pedal to the metal and I was unsettled by all that plastic.

This is not to say it's not a good machine, it would be perfect for Amelle, who I had th joy of dressing up in the Sewing Bee final, she sews sometimes and would really appreciate the bells and whistles. But it's not for the extensive kind of sewing I do.

It was a good test and it got me convinced that electronic machines are really cool whereas I was reticent before. 

It was a good year, full of slowly sewed pretty dresses (which I think was a good think after the tv show) and a damn good chance to better know what I want in a machine.

The transporter guy came to take it this morning.

Me-Made-May 2015

What is it exactly am I doing with my Me-Made-May?

Qu'est-ce qui se passe avec mon Me-Made-May?
J'essaie juste de rigoler un peu. C'est Me-Made tous les jours ici depuis des années alors j'ai décidé de faire d'autre chose. Si vous avez des question sur un patron ou un tissu, demandez et si vous connaissez les paroles de la chanson, chantez avec moi! Le party est sur IG et Flickr.

The M&M Moose / Les Orignaux M&M

Once in a while, JrC wants to sew something.

Last time he did, I got the Merchant & Mills Moosery print fabric and my Simplicity 501 free pyjama pants pattern and said lets do them entirely on the new machine.

When I went for my BabyLock Ovation training in February, I left with the impression that it could do everything but the coffee and automatic buttonholes. I also thought that sounded way too good to be true. So with the kid and I set out to test that.

Une fois de temps en temps, JrC demande à coudre.

La dernière fois, j'ai sorti mon tissu Merchant & Mills Moosery avec des orignaux, mon patron gratuit Simplicity 501 et je lui ai annoncé qu'on ferait tout avec la nouvelle machine.

Quand je suis allée faire la prise en main de la BabyLock Ovation en février, je suis sortie de là avec l'impression que ça pouvait tout faire sauf le café et les boutonnières automatiques. Je me suis dit que c'était un peu trop beau pour être vrai. Alors nous avons décidé de faire un test.

I set a chainstitch and 3-thread overlock, reduced the speed and let JrC have a go at all the straight seams and did the ironing. He loved it, he's always been afraid of the serger but with the slower speed he was in control and did very well. 

The piping kerfuffle was all my fault. I don't know what kind of body dysmorphia made me think I would be able to make the same size for him and me but mine were clearly too small so I cut a strip of fabric, got some piping I had on stash and with the Enlighten (I live in serger luxury!) and the special piping foot, I made a Tofino-like vertical panel.

J'ai mis un point de chaînette et un surjet 3 fils, réduit la vitesse et j'ai laissé JrC faire toutes les coutures droites et j'ai repassé. Il a adoré, il a toujours eu peur de la surjeteuse mais avec la vitesse réduite il avait le contrôle et il a fait des super coutures.

L'épisode du passepoil est entièrement de ma faute. Je ne sais pas quelle dysmorphie corporelle m'a fait pensé que je pouvais couper la même taille pour nous deux, mais ce n'était pas le cas. J'ai donc coupé une bande de tissu, sorti du passepoil du stock et avec le pied spécial passepoil de l'Enlighten (je vis dans le luxe du surjet!), j'ai ajouté une bande verticale style Tofino. 

That serger piping foot is amazing and if the Ovation was mine, I would buy it! Way better than anything I can do on my regular machine trust me. I then used the chainstitch feature to install the elastic and we flatlocked the elastic and the hem for a nice clean RTW finish. 

So the answer to my question is yes, I can make an entire garment with the Ovation, but I'm not a natural. I had to fight the urge to go back to my machine for the more finicky parts. As with any tools, you have to learn how to use them properly for them to become second nature and I am far from it. 

One of the criticism I hear about all in one machines is how complicated it is to go from one mode to the other, but I am not bothered by that, it's just 2 knobs to turn and with the help of jet air threading and automatic tension, the change is easy to do. I really can't judge though as I have never tried other brands.

Ce pied presseur est fantastique et si l'Ovation était à moi, je l'achèterais! Le résultat est bien meilleur que tout ce que je peux faire à la machine normale. Après, j'ai posé l'élastique au point de chaînette et la recouvreuse pour finir proprement.

Donc, la réponse à ma question est oui, je peux faire un vêtement entier avec la surjeteuse/recouvreuse, mais ce n'est pas un geste naturel pour moi. J'ai du repousser l'envie de retourner à la machine pour les parties plus fines. Comme avec tous les outils, il faut apprendre à s'en servir avant que ça devienne une deuxième nature et je n'ai pas le niveau.

Une des critique que j'entends à propos des machine combinées, c'est que c'est compliqué de passer d'un mode à l'autre. Franchement, sur cette machine ça ne me dérange pas du tout. Y'a 2 boutons à tourner et avec le jet d'air et la tension automatique, le changement est facile à faire. Ceci dit, je suis mauvais juge, je n'ai jamais essayé d'autres marques.

JrC and I, being easily amused, get a kick out of dressing alike for a few minutes everyday. And since we made them, my grumpy 11 year old is not so grumpy anymore. 

Who'd have tought that the Canadian moose would bring peace in our house!

JrC et moi s'amusons d'un rien, alors être habillés pareil pendant quelques minutes chaque jour nous fait rigoler. C'est bien, parce que j'ai un garçon de 11 ans habituellement grognon le matin et depuis, il est moins grognon. 

Qui aurait pu prédire que l'orignal canadien amènerait la paix à la maison!
