I've worn the doily skirt twice. Was it worth making it?

If you add all the time I spent hunting for doilies, bleaching the doilies, crocheting little flowers doilies, assembling the doilies, the time it took to repair, I broke it both times I wore it, and compare it with the total time I spent wearing it, I'd say it's a total waste.

But, it's incredibly popular. 

My Grand-Mother and my crafty aunts loved it at my parents 50th. At Antoine's all white 50th b'day, when I ripped it on a metal chair and all the women felt sorry for me, I was able to say something offhandedly to the song of :"nah! don't worry about it, I'll fix it up, I think I still have a couple of tiny flowers left in a tin someplace". Some jaws dropped, compliments were made and I was able to conceal my glowing pride by taking another sip of wine.

So yes, once in a while, undertaking a huge time consuming project is worth it. We all need some pride.

J'ai porté la jupe en napperons 2 fois. Est-ce que vous pensez que ça valait la peine de la faire?

Si vous additionnez le temps passé à chasser des napperons, javelliser les napperons, crocheter des mini napperons/fleurs, assembler les napperons et les réparations, je l'ai brisé à chaque fois, et comparez le tout aux quelques heures passées à la porter, je vous dirais que j'ai perdu mon temps.

Mais, cette jupe est extrêmement populaire.

Ma Grand-Mère et mes tantes habiles l'ont adoré au 50ème de mes parents. Au 50ème anniversaire tout en blanc d'Antoine, quand je l'ai déchiré sur une chaise en métal et que toutes les femmes présentes étaient désolées pour moi, j'ai pu dire avec détachement : "bah! c'est pas grave, je vais la réparer, il doit me rester une petite fleur dans une boîte quelque part". Après le petit moment de vide, des compliments furent faits et je pus cacher ma radieuse fierté en buvant une autre petite gorgée.

Alors oui, il est bon parfois d'entreprendre un projet prenant. On a toutes besoin d'un peu de fierté.

C'est la jupe napperons dans la nature lors du 50ème anniversaire de mariage de mes parents. Voici mon clan tant aimé, mal à l'aise devant le photographe officiel.

C'était un événement plein d'amour, normal vu que ça fait 50 ans que mes parents en donnent.

Mon seul souhait est de pouvoir en distribuer autant qu'eux.

Je fais de meilleures photos de la jupe et je reviens.

Yes it is the doilies skirt out in the wild, at my parents 50th wedding anniversary. Meet my much loved crew a little stiff on the official pictures.

It was a lovely event, loved was spread all around which is normal as this is what my parents have been doing for all these years.

My wish is to give as much as I have received in my lifetime.

Crochet Leftovers / Des Restes de Crochet

That's it, that's all! / C'est tout ce qui reste!

I stayed awake at night trying to find an elegant way to attach the doilies to the skirt an here is what I did. I attached a cotton ribbon on the waistline with a zigzag stitch. / Je me suis réveillée la nuit en essayant de trouver une manière élégante d'attacher les napperons à la jupe et voici ce que j'ai fait. J'ai cousu du ruban coton sur taille.

I put in a large bias, serged the seam allowance, put in an invisible zipper and then stitched in the ditch. / J'ai cousu un biais très large, surjeté l'intérieur, inséré une fermeture invisible, j'ai replié et refermé.

It should hold, as this is quite heavy. / C'est lourd, mais ça devrait tenir.

All I have to do is fill the holes with the little flowers. It'll be ready! / Tout ce qui me reste à faire, c'est boucher les trous avec les petites fleurs. Ça va être prêt à temps.

Cheating - A Doily Update

I am cheating!

I was supposed to have one more week, but my trip has been rescheduled and moved up an entire week. So, the doilies that were going to be attached by hand are being zigzagged into place. Chut! Don't tell anyone. 

This is the inspiration for the skirt. I know how to do the belt area but I still don't know if I should even out the hem or leave it as is, which, I think, is going to make me look like an old hippy who hasn't finished her crochet blanquet. 

Any of you know if I can take a crochet hook on a plane?

More droop!

One inch! It hurts me more than turning 49 this week! 

I didn't know how to lower a princess bust line on the the MuuMuu so I used ThingsBe's tutorial. I love the Interweb for that and I want to thank you all for putting this wealth of information out, I really, really appreciate it and I'm a much better seamstress because of all of your generosity.

By the way, if you'd like to make one, there was a 2 for 1 in the pattern envelope, a size 12 and a 14, so I'll send a scan of the envelope, pattern and instructions set size 14 to whomever claims it in the comments. If there are more than one person, I'll draw a name.

I have found a wonderful feedsack reproduction for JrC's dress design from Windham Fabrics and snapped up everything Heart Of Dixie had, a little more than 4 yards. 

I am still working on the doily skirt, making the muslin, but if it turns out a Craftfail, I could always order this lace skirt from La Redoute!

Je ne savais pas comment faire pour descendre une couture princesse sur la MuuMuu alors j'ai utilisé le tutoriel de ThingsBe's (très compréhensible beaucoup de photos pour les françaises). J'adore le net pour ça et j'aimerais ici vous remercier pour toute l'information que vous mettez en ligne. J'aprécie beaucoup, beaucoup et je suis devenue, grâce à votre générosité, une bien meilleure couturière. 

Dans l'enveloppe, il n'y avait pas 1 mais 2 patrons, un 12 et un 14 ans alors, manifestez-vous dans les commentaires si vous voulez vous en faire une, je vous enverrai la taille 14 avec un scan de l'enveloppe, le patron et les instructions. Si vous êtes plusieurs, on fera un tirage au sort.

J'ai trouvé une merveilleuse reproduction des années 30 de chez Windham Fabrics pour faire la robe de JrC et j'ai acheté tout le stock disponible chez Heart Of Dixie, à peu près 4 mètres.

My Doilies

Long time readers of this blog know that I am collecting doilies to make a skirt.

At first, I was doing it in an offhanded way as I couldn't think of an occasion to wear such a beautiful skirt, but my parents will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in August, and obviously this is a good enough reason to start the project.

Here is what I plan on doing : I will first make a muslin of the skirt, baste the doilies and tie them up together with little crocheted flowers. It's a pretty good plan I think except, I don't really know how to crochet. I took it up briefly in December to make snowflakes, but really I have a lot of learning to do.

If you know of a good crochet related resource or have a better idea on how to do this, I am all ears. In the meantime, I'll try to find a Crocheting for Dummies book or something.

Collecting Doilies

Isn't that dress absolutely unbelievable? There are more pictures here, where you can ooooh! and aaaah!  some more. It is a truly stunning handmade wedding dress!
Mark this as the first time I want to wear crochet. I have never liked it, but I really would like a skirt like this to wear at a special occasion. I may start collecting doilies!
