It can happen to you too!

I've been on a pretty good streak sewing-wise this year but once in a while, it's good to remind yourself that things don't always turn out. Like that day, I thought I was being so clever and then Bam! Got hit over the head. 

I laughed, thought you would get a chuckle out of it and submitted this picture to Heather Mann's Craftfail's website. 

My seam ripper being my best friend I fixed it, but sometimes, something you thought would be stellar just isn't or you mangle things beyond repair and everything ends up in the trash. We sewicalists learn from our failure, wasted fabric and, being an optimistic lot, we start over again.

Ça arrive à tout le monde!

J'ai eu pas mal de succès en couture cette année, mais une fois de temps en temps, ça fait du bien d'être rappelée à l'ordre, ce ne sont pas tous nos projets qui sont couronnés de réussite. Comme ce jour fatidique où, pensant révolutionner le monde de la couture, Bam! Je me suis pris une claque.

J'ai rigolé et pensant faire rigoler les copines, j'ai envoyé la photo au site Craftfail de Heather Mann.

Mon découd-vite est mon meilleur ami et j'ai pu réparer ma bourde mais parfois je passe le seuil du sauvetage et ça passe direct par la case poubelle ou "mon truc révolutionnaire qui va changer la face du monde" ne l'est pas. Heureusement, nous, couturiers et couturières, apprenons de nos erreurs, de notre tissu gâché et, optimistes de nature, démarrons de nouveaux projets.

Heather's friendly reminder that things don't always go as planned came out the same week as my book and I thought it very timely (I'm in the book p.31). A little humility goes a long way. 

Most of the book is about food and crafting misshaps, but we can relate to that too right? Laugh about it and start over again.

Le rappel amical de Heather que les choses ne sont pas toujours aussi réussies qu'on le voudrait (je suis dans son livre p.31) est sorti la même semaine que mon livre et est tombé à point pour me rappeler de rester humble. 

La majorité du bouquin concerne des bourdes de cuisine et de bricolage mais on peut parfaitement s'identifier non? En rire un peu et recommencer.

What a stinker!

No, I am not talking about the actual results, I'm saying it stinks, the plaid smells like it's been in a damp attic for 20 years and the jean, washed 3 times, has the bouquet of an oil tanker. Pressing was horrendous, the mix was toxic.

As you can see at the back, it's hanging a little funny and I'll have to undo the pretty topstitching and go back in to fix the hem because the two fabrics hang too differently. But, I still am being real smug here as I am quite proud of myself for, this coat is REVERSIBLE!

Though as I have said before, it doesn't have the necessary winterwear ease, the puzzle was a lot of fun to put together and kept me up at night, as I made up funky sewing instructions when trying to find a way to pass the sash from one side to the other which, as you know, led to my recent miscalculation.

I'll let it hang outside all summer to get rid of the foul smell (I feel like Charlie Brown's Linus when I wear it) and will redo the hem right before the nighttime temperature drops in August. This should take me to the end of November, when I'll start thinking about making a winter coat again.

Ça craint!

Je ne vous parle pas du résultat, je vous parle de l'odeur. Le tartan sent la moisissure de grenier et le jean, lavé 3 fois, à l'odeur de fond de cale d'un pétrolier. Le mélange malodorant lors du repassage était toxique.

Comme vous pouvez le voir, le dos ne tombe pas comme il faut, je vais devoir découdre les jolies surpiqures et refaire le ourlet parce que les deux matières n'ont pas le même drapé. Voyez mon air satisfait, je suis assez fière de moi quand même parce que je viens de faire un manteau REVERSIBLE! 

Comme je l'ai déjà dit, je n'ai pas assez d'aisance pour en faire un manteau d'hiver, mais le puzzle était le fun à solutionner et j'ai perdu quelques heures de sommeil en cherchant une manière élégante de faire passer la ceinture d'un côté à l'autre. L'invention d'étapes de coutures supplémentaires pour y arriver m'a été fatale l'autre jour.

Je vais l'étendre dehors tout l'été pour enlever les mauvaises odeurs (je me sens comme Linus dans Charlie Brown quand je le porte) et je referai le ourlet quand les températures du soir redescendront en août. Je pourrai le porter jusqu'en novembre quand je recommencerai à penser à la confection d'un manteau d'hiver.

I've always been careful not to drink and sew, but apparently a slight hangover can also impair your better judgement as well as erase all of your sewing knowledge. I am going back to bed!

Je ne veux pas en parler!

J'ai toujours fait attention à ne pas boire et coudre, mais apparemment, un petit lendemain de veille peut aussi affaiblir votre bon jugement et effacer tout ce que vous savez de la couture. Je retourne me coucher!

The Frankenpattern Vivienne Westwood Muslin

Although I haven't found the right fabric and spring is coming, I am constantly thinking about my future beautiful red winter coat as I wear the house coat every morning. I also thought I could do a test run with the fabulous tweed I found, but I changed my mind when I saw this. I'll come up with a better project for it.
I nicknamed it the Frankenpattern because of all the bits and pieces that I have taken everywhere to make all the changes I wanted.
I changed the sleeves and the armscye (Burda  08/2010 #113) so I could wear a sweater underneath, and after seeing this Derek Lam shawl collar hood, I added one as well (Burda 2694). It does rain a lot in the winter here, it might come in handy.

I lifted the skirt from the Vogue 3000, because all the gathers at the waist on the original were a bit much for a coat. I have some tweaking to do on the sash and I have put some side pockets which you don't see here.

I still have issues with the sleeves, the ease need to be distributed better but, I am not entirely dissatisfied with the muslin apart from the fact that it's way too small for a winter coat. How do I add the necessary ease? How much? Where? I cut through the middle and widen it? I don't know how to do this, so I'll take advice if you have any, or a link.
Just in case you are wondering, I used this most excellent tartan for a muslin because it's another op-shop find, wool with a high polyester content, that was cheaper to use than real muslin fabric and, I knew I would get a better general idea.
Now, I am having second though about wasting it, seeing that warts and all this is wearable, so I might take it apart, line it and have my own Vivienne Westwood moment. What do you think?

La Toile Vivienne Westwood Frankenpatron

Voici la toile n° 2 du Butterick 9214.
Car même si je n'ai pas trouvé le bon tissu, je pense à mon beau manteau d'hiver rouge tous les jours puisque que je porte la robe de chambre qui l'inspire tous les matins. Je pensais aussi utiliser le super tweed trouvé l'autre jour, mais en voyant ça, j'ai changé d'avis. Je trouverai bien une autre projet pour le mettre en valeur.
Je l'ai surnommé le Frankenpatron parce que je suis allée chercher des pièces un peu partout pour faire les changements que je voulais.
J'ai changé les manches (Burda  08/2010 #113) pour accomoder un petit pull et après avoir vu cette capuche de Derek Lam, je me suis dit que ça serait pratique pour la pluie bretonne (Burda 2694).

J'ai piqué la jupe du Vogue 3000 parce que les fronces à la taille de l'original ça faisait un peu beaucoup, j'ai encore un peu de travail sur la ceinture et j'ai mis des poches que vous ne voyez pas ici.

Les manches sont pas top top, il faut que je répartisse l'aisance un peu mieux, mais je trouve que le résultat est pas mal à part du fait que, c'est trop petit pour un manteau d'hiver et là, je ne sais pas quoi faire. Comment ajouter l'aisance nécéssaire? Où? Combien? Je coupe dans le milieu et je l'élargis? Si vous savez, je voudrais bien qu'on me montre.
Eh oui, j'ai fait une toile avec un tartan polyester-laine, que j'ai payé moins cher chez Emmaüs que le prix du coton que j'utilise habituellement et ça donne une meilleure idée du résultat final.
Mais oui, j'hésite à voir ce beau tissu aller à la poubelle après, parce que même avec ses défauts, cette toile est portable. Il est donc possible que je la découse et que je la recouse avec une doublure pour avoir mon petit moment Vivienne Westwood moi aussi. Vous en pensez quoi?
