I've just opened up new doors of sewing perceptions!
I made a bathing suit yesterday morning. As with all firsts, it's full of mistakes but, I've just discovered a whole new area of expertise to be gained and sewing fun to be had. Plus, I won't have to go to a poorly lit store to try a bathing suit ever again which is reason enough to start sewing them (I hate getting undressed in a store's cabin but can sew in my underwear!)
Why was I so hesitant? I ask myself that pretty often actually, most of the time, the answer is either I am full of stupid principles or I'm a doofus, but it should be : what have I got to loose? Some leftover stretch fabric from my Infinite Dress using up space in a bin for 2 years that's what and I won't be missing it much.
When I make another one...
- I'll use another pattern,
I wanted something covering but I think I went off the deep end in this area, this is more than modest, it's an armor. If ever there was to be 1920 bathing suit modeling contest in my town, I'll have a suit for that!
- I'll follow proper instructions,
This pattern came without so I dove head first and added the lining as an afterthought after the fitting which led as you would imagine to some bunching of fabric and some swearing.
- I won't stretch the elastic as much,
Working with null or negative ease, my instinct tells me that I don't need to pull on it as much as I did, it is a little tight in the top area as you might guess.
- I'll buy proper swimsuit lining,
I self-lined it and it's uncomfortable, the fabric sticks to the skin. My guess is a proper lining won't do that.
Otherwise, it went swimmingly, I printed and cut Saturday night, fit (surprisingly easy!) and sewn it yesterday morning and was at the beach by 2pm. That's pretty fast and encouraging.

Je viens d'ouvrir une nouvelle porte de la perception!
Je me suis fait un maillot de bain hier matin. Comme pour tous les trucs que l'on fait pour la première fois, c'est plein d'erreurs, mais je viens de découvrir un autre domaine de la couture à explorer. De plus, je n'aurai plus à visiter de cabine d'essayage à l'éclairage blafard (je déteste me déshabiller dans un magasin mais je peux parfaitement coudre en sous-vêtements!), c'est assez pour me motiver.
Je me demande pourquoi j'ai si longtemps hésité. C'est une question que je me pose assez régulièrement et la réponse habituelle oscille entre je suis une truffe et ou j'ai trop de principes mais elle devrait être : qu'est-ce que j'ai à perdre? Les restes de ma Robe Infinie qui moisissent dans le fond d'un bac depuis 2 ans, ça va pas me manquer!
Quand j'en ferai un autre...

Je voulais un maillot qui couvre les bourrelets mais là j'y allée un peu fort, c'est une armure de modestie! Si jamais il y a un concours de maillot 1920 dans mon village, je serai équipée!
- Je vais suivre des instructions,
Ce patron n'en avait pas alors j'ai plongé n'importe comment et j'ai fini par rajouter la doublure après les essayages ce qui a contribué à du taponnage de tissu inutile et à quelques jurons bien sentis.
- Je n'avais pas besoin de tirer autant sur l'élastique,
Mon instinct me dit que avec de l'aisance négative, on n'a pas besoin de tirer sur l'élastique comme je l'ai fait en haut, d'ailleurs, ça tire un peu.
- Je vais acheter de la vraie doublure pour maillot,
J'ai utilisé le même tissu pour la doublure et franchement, je trouve ça inconfortable parce qu'il colle à la peau, je pense qu'une doublure appropriée ne fera pas ça.
A part ça, ça c'est bien passé, je l'ai imprimé et coupé samedi soir, ajusté (plus facile qu'on pense!) et cousu hier matin et j'étais à la plage à 14h. C'est plutôt rapide et très encourageant!
