The Jason Epilogue

Meet Jean-Louis. 

Jean-Louis is a austringer (meaning he hunts with eagles). He is holding a year old Blue Chilean Eagle and modeling his brand new Jason - John G Hardy tweed vest. He is an amazing guy, the kind of person who changes your life when you meet them and Mr C wanted to thank him so I made him a vest.

Pretty good considering I fitted him through Skype. 

If you are a follower of this blog, you know I have been agonizing over the buttonholes, and I am sad to report that I choked. I didn't trust myself to make 7 perfect identical buttonholes.

Jean-Louis has special ordered some pretty hunt buttons for his French Austringer Club and that made me very very nervous, so I corded the buttonholes instead. Cording you say? 

If you've been wondering what's the little thingy in the back and the grooves in the front on your buttonhole foot are for, this is it. It's a cool sewing machine trick which gives some depth and texture to your buttonhole and makes it more durable as well. There is an excellent tutorial here and a PDF there. 

I'll be using this trick again for sure, the result is really neat.

Le Gilet Jason l'Epilogue

Je vous présente Jean-Louis.
Jean-Louis est aiglier (il chasse avec des aigles). Il porte un jeune aigle bleu du Chili et son tout nouveau gilet Jason en tweed John G Hardy. C'est un homme extraordinaire du genre qui peut changer votre vie et Mr C voulait le remercier alors je lui ai fait un gilet.

Ça lui va pas mal, si on considère que j'ai ajusté le gilet par Skype.
Maintenant, si vous suivez ce blog, vous savez que j'ai agonisé sur les boutonnières mais, la triste vérité, c'est que j'ai choqué (pour utiliser un terme marin). Je n'avais aucune confiance en mes capacités de faire 7 boutonnières identiques et parfaites.

Jean-Louis avait commandé des bouton de venerie spécialement pour son gilet et pour les Aigliers de France et ça m'a rendue nerveuse alors j'ai cordé les boutonnières à la machine. Corder?

Si vous vous êtes toujours demandé c'est pourquoi les petits bitonniots derrière et devant votre pied  boutonnière et ben ça sert à ça. C'est un truc génial pour faire de jolies boutonnières durables avec du relief. J'ai trouvé des tutoriels en anglais ici et un pdf ici.
Le résultat est superbe, je vais certainement en faire d'autres.

Un Petit Point sur les Boutonnières / A Little Buttonhole Update

Je m'entraîne toujours et comme disent les voileux : "chu pas au vent de la bouée!"

Comme il faudra en faire 7, toutes pareilles, je me suis dit qu'un peu de précision m'aiderait peut-être. J'ai donc acheté de nouveaux outils : un ciseau à bois pour couper la boutonnière et un emporte-pièce pour faire les petits trous pour la tige du bouton. Faire des boutonnières, c'est un peu comme tricoter ou crocheter et beaucoup comme broder, le succès est dans la tension constante, et le même geste répété des centaines de fois. 

J'y retourne, la perfection est dans la répétition.

I am a buttonhole maker in training and I am not there yet!

To help me, I have to make 7 with a high degree of exactitude, I thought some precision tools would help so I bought a chisel for the slit and a punch for the shank hole. I may have a better chance of succeeding if I am very very precise. Making buttonholes is a lot like knitting or crocheting and a lot like embroidery, success lies in repeating the same gesture with the same tension hundreds of times.

Practice makes perfect, I better get back to it.

I did find a workaround for the collar and it's looking very good. 

I am just about to close it and I am wondering if I should topstitch or not, the inspiration vest has topstitching running all around. What do you think?

J'ai trouvé la solution pour le col et c'est vraiment bien.

Je vais fermer la veste et je me demande si je devrais surpiquer ou pas. Le gilet modèle a une surpiqûre qui fait tout le tour. Vous en pensez quoi vous?

La Pattemouille Dispendieuse / The Expensive Press Cloth

J'ai du composer avec les trous de mites quand j'ai coupé le gilet Jason.

Je l'ai inspecté soigneusement et j'ai épinglé tous les petits défauts.

Heureusement, il y en avait assez pour faire le gilet, malheureusement, il me restait un grand carré rendu inutilisable pas ces larves voraces. Pendant quelques jours, je me disais ah! c'est triste, qu'est-ce que je pourrais bien en faire? Je ne voulais vraiment pas jeter, j'aime ce tweed. Puis j'ai eu besoin d'une pattemouille. 

J'ai coupé et surjeté un grand carré, ça m'a pris 2 minutes, et maintenant, j'ai la pattemouille la plus chère de l'ouest de la France!

I carefully inspected it, and I pinned little coloured reminders.

Happily, there was enough to make the vest, unhappily, there was  a big chunk of it made unusable by voracious larvae. I wondered what to do with the leftovers for a few days, I didn't want to waste, I love this tweed! Then I needed a press cloth.

I cut and serged a big square of it, it took 2 minutes and now I have the most expensive press cloth in Western France!

The Gimp / La Milanaise

We interrupt the current muslin programming to bring the news that I have found gimp.

I intend to make hand worked buttonholes for the Jason vest. My sewing machine makes standard buttonholes, but the John G Hardy tweed needs exceptionnal ones.

I have to thank Mr Julien Scavini (he blogs in French here) for being really nice and taking some of his precious time to secure gimp and than send some my way. It just cannot be found in the local sewing haunts around here.

Nous interrompons notre programmation sur les toiles pour vous annoncer que j'ai trouvé de la milanaise.

J'ai eu envie de faire de jolies boutonnières au gilet Jason. Ma machine fait des boutonnières acceptables mais le tweed John G Hardy demande des boutonnières exceptionnelles.

Je remercie Mr Julien Scavini (il blogue ici) car il a été très gentil de prendre un peu de son temps précieux pour me procurer et m'envoyer la milanaise. Ici, c'est impossible tout simplement à trouver.

I am not collecting tweed!

I am collecting doilies for that skirt I want to make. It's just that while rummaging, I keep running into yardage and yardage of luscious woolen fabric. Obviously, somebody somewhere donated all his priceless tweed to Emmaüs here in Brittany and I have been snapping it up.

I knew nothing about John G Hardy Alsport heavyweight tweed before. I didn't know that kings wore any and that they are appointed by the Queen of England. I certainly didn't know that if I was to walk into a store and buy some, it would cost me £64 per meter. I would not go into a store and buy fabric at that price. 

Moth hole

Anyhow, I did pay only 4€ for 2 meters and I'll have to dance around some little moth holes here and there, but heck! I might have a riding coat in the works somewhere in me. Anybody here knows how to mend?

Je ne collectionne pas le tweed.
Je collectionne les napperons pour faire cette jupe. Mais il semble qu'à chaque fois que je chine, je trouve des mètres et des mètres de laine. Quelqu'un, quelque part a fait don de tweed de grand prix à Emmaüs et  il n'y a que moi que ça intéresse.

Je ne connaissait rien du tweed John G Hardy Alsport avant. Je ne savais pas que des rois en ont porté et qu'il sont fournisseur officiel de la Reine d'Angleterre. Je ne me doutais pas qu'il me faudrait débourser £64 le mètre, d'ailleurs, je n'irais pas dans un magasin acheter du tissu à ce prix là. (désolée les liens sont en anglais!)

Trou de mite

Ceci dit, j'ai eu 2 mètres pour 4€. Je vais devoir esquiver quelques trous de mites mais, j'ai peut-être une veste d'équitation en moi à quelque part! Est-ce que quelqu'un sait comment repriser?
