Prada Inspired

I love Miuccia Prada. 

I love the work she does, the process behind the work she does, the thinking behind the process, the original idea. She amazes me on a regular basis.

I knock off Miuccia Prada, or Margiela, or Jil Sander or whoever, not because I would buy the clothes they make, but because it's a way of getting a hint of what goes on in their minds and understand their creative process which I admire greatly. 

Making this raincoat was unlike anything I've made before.

If you want to make one, you'll need some special tools, a pattern with very tiny seam allowances, in this case I modified Burda 09/2007 #104 to eliminate de darts and lifted the hood from McCall's 2980, and 25m of bias binding. All the seams are encased in bias, sewn wrong side to wrong side then felled. Please feel free to not follow the usual order of construction as building a coat right side out is mind boggling. But beware of mistakes you might make as all the pinholes will show.
I wanted pretty, so this thing is probably not totally waterproof, but if it's your thing, there is some tape for that. 

Cuben Fiber is a special material :
- It's hard to find. Especially the breathable stuff, but if some people around you sail or hike, they might be able to help. You can buy some at Bear Paw Design or Quest Outfitters.
- It's expensive.
- You can't cut it! It will dull your scissors, the best way to cut it is with a rotary. Get a new blade when finished.
- It will dull your sewing needle. Throw it away when finished.
- You can't pin it. Pattern weights are de rigeur, pin with tape.
- You can write on it. I used a pencil and a ball point pen to mark it.
- It has no give. So you won't be able to correct your mistake by pulling and tugging slightly on the fabric, it will not ease so choose you pattern accordingly. Small seam allowances are a big help, mine were 1cm.
- There is no bias, weave or weft so you can do some creative cutting.
- It can't stand the heat. Do not iron, ever.
- The less holes you poke in it the better it will resist in time. Use your longest stitch.
- You will not be able to hide your loose ends. I burned mine with a lighter like they do when sailmaking.
- It's noisy and naturally crinkly.
- It's extremely lightweight. The zipper weighs more than the rest and the whole thing is 167g. I will take it on my travels.

Now I'm just hoping, as this is not the breathable Cuben Fiber, that I haven't made a sauna!

J'aime son travail, le processus derrière son travail, la réflexion avant le processus, l'idée d'origine. Je suis en admiration de son travail très régulièrement.

Si je copie Miuccia Prada, ou Margiela ou Jil Sander ou je ne sais plus qui d'autre, ce n'est pas parce que je voudrais acheter leurs vêtements, c'est pour avoir une idée de ce qu'il se passe dans leur tête, comprendre leur processus créatif que j'admire.

Faire cet imperméable est différent de tout ce que j'ai fait avant.
Si vous devez en faire un, il vous faudra quelques outils inhabituels, un patron avec de toutes petites marges de couture, dans mon cas, Burda 09/2007 #104 que j'ai modifié pour enlever les pinces de poitrine et j'ai volé la capuche du McCall's 2980, plus 25m de biais. Le manteau est construit envers contre envers, cousu avec le biais que j'ai ensuite abattu. N'hésitez surtout pas à ne pas suivre l'ordre de construction habituel, car faire un manteau sur l'endroit est très déstabilisant. Mais vous ne pourrez pas vous tromper et défaire, tous les trous se verront. Je voulais que ce soit joli, donc ce n'est sans doute pas vraiment imperméable, mais si c'est important pour vous, il y a un scotch pour ça.

Le Cuben Fiber est très spécial :
- C'est difficile à trouver, surtout le respirant, mais si vous connaissez des montagnards ou des marins, ils vont peut-être pouvoir vous aider. Vous pouvez en acheter chez Bear Paw Design ou Quest Outfitters.
- Ça coûte cher.
- Ça ne se coupe pas. Ça va émousser vos super ciseaux, la meilleure manière c'est la lame rotative et une nouvelle lame quand vous aurez fini.
- Ça émousse les aiguilles, qu'il faudra remplacer aussi.
- On ne peut pas épingler, utilisez des poids et épinglez avec du ruban adhésif.
- Vous pouvez écrire dessus, j'ai utilisé un stylo et un crayon papier pour marquer.
- Ça ne bouge pas, ça s'étire pas, vous ne pourrez pas ajuster en cousant. 1cm de marge va vous aider.
- C'est totalement sans droit fil, sans biais, sans sens, vous pourrez vraiment couper n'importe comment.
- Ça ne supporte pas la chaleur. Pas de repassage svp.
- Moins il y a de trous plus c'est résistant, donc cousez à grands points.
- J'ai fait comme en voilerie, j'ai brûlé mes fils qu'on aurait vu en transparence.
- C'est bruyant et naturellement froissé.
- C'est ultra-léger. La fermeture est plus lourde que le reste. Au total, ça pèse 167g. Je vais le prendre pour voyager.

J'espère seulement que, comme je n'ai pas utilisé la version respirante du Cuben, que je n'ai pas fabriqué un sauna!

Pendant ce temps, on pourra rêver de se faire cette robe-tapis-cape de plage pour occuper le plus de surface possible à la plage! Elle me rappelle vaguement la robe de Jil Sander que j'ai beaucoup aimé au printemps. Ça doit être à cause des rayures.

So in the meantime, you can plan to make this beach-towel-cape-dress which vaguely reminds me of the Jil Sander dress I fell in love with in the Spring, probably because of the stripes. This one you'll want to make if you want to take up serious real estate at the beach!

La Reprise

Je ne suis pas très photogénique c'est un fait, mais si je tire un peu la gueule, c'est aussi parce qu'il s'est mis à pleuvoir 3 secondes après. Cette robe est fantastique et c'est ça l'important.

Me-Made-June et l'Expérimentation Couturière sont de grandes motivatrices et ma réserve de vêtements à recycler diminue. Je ne me rappelle plus quand je vous ai dit que je n'aime pas repriser et je préfère me faire du neuf, mais il y a tout de même des limites. Cette robe a attendu plus de 5 ans que je m'en occupe et c'est une honte vu ce qu'il y avait à faire et le résultat. C'est bien ma perte.
Elle est de marque Ports International a fait la couverture de Elle Quebec à l'été 1990. Je sais parce que je travaillais chez le séparateur de couleur et j'ai vu la couverture avant tout le monde. Ce midi là, je suis allée chez Ogilvy acheter cette robe. Je ne cousais plus à cette époque, mais j'avais de l'argent et un goût prononcé pour les vêtements et les souliers hors de prix à la façon impeccable que j'ai toujours. Cette robe en est un bon exemple.

Le Vichy de coton est doux et tissé serré, les boutons sont de nacre, les marges intérieures sont sergées puis repliées et cousues et quelques détails cousus main attestent du soin porté à sa fabrication. J'adorais la regarder, mais je ne la portais pas.

Tout ce dont j'avais besoin, c'était d'une copine qui épinglerais le ourlet pendant que je fait un tour sur moi-même juchée sur une table. Merci Marianne! Je l'ai délesté de 27cm. Je n'ai pas de photo avant, mais elle m'allait qux chevilles.

Je la trouvais serrée à la taille mais j'ai changé de ceinture et tout d'un coup tout allait bien alors j'ai décrété qu'il s'agissait bien d'un problème de ceinture et je lui ai ajouté des oeillets. C'est pas trop la bonne teinte, mais je suis persuadée que personne ne viendra me dire qu'il ne sont pas de la bonne couleur. D'ailleurs si ça m'arrive, je saurai que c'est vous et on rira un bon coup!

L'expérience Jil Sander continue et je test un autre prototype. C'est pas encore ça, mais on y est presque.

On The Mend

Not only I am not photogenic, but the weather turned to rain right after this shot which might explain why I am making a face. This dress is awesome though, so that should make up for it.

Me-Made-June and The Sewing Productivity Experiment are great motivators and I am making quite a dent in the stockpile of clothing in need of a refashion. I can't remember when I've said it, but I don't like mending and would rather make something new so basically this dress has been waiting for over 5 frigging years for it's turn at the machine. Knowing what was done to it and the result, it's a real shame and my lost. 

This is a Ports International dress that was on the cover of Elle Quebec in June or July of 1990. I know because at the time we were doing their pre-press at work so I saw the cover before everyone else and went to Ogilvy's and bought the dress on the spot, during my lunch hour. I wasn't sewing back then, I had some money to spare and a taste for expensive and extremely well made clothing and shoes, some of which I still have. This dress is a prime example.

The cotton Vichy is tight spun and soft to the touch, the buttons mother of pearl, the inside seams are serged AND turned and stitched and there are a few hand sewn construction details which tells you how much care was put into making it. I loved looking at it but wasn't wearing it.

This refashion was easy as hardly anything was needed but a good friend to pin the hem whilst I stood on the table. Merci Marianne! I shortened the dress by a whopping 27cm (about 10 1/2 inches). I didn't take a before picture, but imagine the skirt going down to my ankles. 

The dress also felt a bit tight at the waist when I tried it on last year, but with the red bow belt it was fine, so it was in fact a belt problem, which was easily taken care of. Not quite the right color, but it'll do as I am absolutely certain nobody will come up to me and tell me to my face that there is something wrong with the colour of my grommets. If someone ever does, I'll know it's you and we'll all have a good laugh.

The Jil Sander experiment is still on. I have made yet another muslin. Not perfect but we are getting closer.

Jil Sander Inspired

Leave it to me to start a productivity project on a week when Jr C has a 4 day weekend!

I did manage to work on most of what I cut on Monday and finish some of it. All of them are bags : 2 are VeryPurplePerson Reversible, 1 is a jean version of my blue bag and 3 are inspired by Jil Sander's Market Bag.

I hung out for so long on Jil Sander's site looking at that dress that I also saw the rest of her stuff, including her Market Bag which, I find, is an incredibly clever way of finding beauty in ubiquity.

I made the first ones out of this promotional flag that was slated for the waste bin. They are huge, more supermarket huge then market huge. Actually, they are pretty useful for transporting beer, but they are crude and lack elegance, so I made a smaller one which I lined because I thought it would be prettier.

It is pretty, but quite bulky in the handles there. I guess this is why Mrs Sander just put a bias to finish hers because when you hold it in one hand, you end up with a whopping 16 layers of fabric and that just too much. So I'll be making lighter versions in the future, heck, given the opportunity, I might even make a leather one!

As all of you know, I am a participant in Me-Made-June, but I won't talk about it much here unless it involves wearing a garment that hasn't been blogged about already. If you really love sewing as I do, you should check out the action because The MMJ girls are rocking big time!
I will keep the new schedule for a little while, to see what I can come up with. Next up is a dress refashion for me.

Commencer une expérience de productivité pendant la semaine où JrC fait le pont, c'était pas super brillant.
J'ai travaillé sur tous les projets coupés lundi et j'ai même réussi à en finir quelques uns, principalement des sacs à main. J'ai fini 2 VeryPurplePerson Reversible, 1 sac bleu en jean and 3 sacs inspirés par le sac Market Bag de Jil Sander.
J'ai passé tellement de temps à regarder les rayures de Mme Sander que je suis tombée sur ses sacs. Ces "pochons" transcendent l'omniprésence de leur version plastique et il m'en fallait au moins un!

J'ai fait les premiers avec des drapeaux promotionnels qui allaient passer à la poubelle. Ce sont des grands sacs, pas format marché, plutôt format supermarché, très utiles pour transporter de la bière mais sans l'élégance du plus petit que j'ai doublé pour faire plus joli.

Plus joli, mais plus épais aussi quand on le porte dans une main, on a 16 épaisseurs de tissu, c'est beaucoup trop. Je crois que c'est pour ça qu'ils l'ont simplement fini avec un biais chez Mme Sander. J'en ferai donc des version plus light la prochaine fois, peut-être même une version cuir si l'occasion se présente.
Si vous voulez vous en faire un, j'ai trouvé le tutoriel (anglais) chez Style Hurricane où il y a plein d'exemples avec des matières diverses et variées.
Comme vous le savez, je participe à Me-Made-June, mais j'en parlerai pas des masses ici, sauf si les vêtements n'ont pas fait l'objet d'un billet, mais, vraiment, allez y faire un tour, les filles MMJ sont géniales!
Je vais garder les nouveaux horaires pour un petit moment, ça à l'air de marcher et j'ai une petite robe chinée à refaire pour moi cette fois.

Jil Sander

I'm a little obsessed by this Jil Sander dress.

I don't want to wear one, I don't think it would be very flattering on me, but I would love to make one, for the puzzle. 

Look at the back pleats, aren't they wonderful? It looks like one continuous piece of fabric folded up. Though I doubt it is because it's got pockets. Anyhow, it's one great piece of pattern making and I would love it if one of the big 4 would collaborate with her, just so we could touch a little bit of her genius.

Wait! There is another reason why I like this dress so much. It reminds me of the dress I made to get my Girl's Guide sewing badge in 1975. All of a sudden, I feel the urge to revisit that pattern. 

As if my sewing list wasn't long enough already!

Jil Sander

Cette robe de Jil Sander, c'est ma nouvelle obsession.
Je ne veux pas en porter une, je ne crois pas que ça m'irait très bien mais, j'aimerais juste en faire une pour résoudre le casse-tête.

Vous avez vu les plis du dos? On dirait une seule pièce de tissu. J'ai quelques doutes à ce sujet vu que la robe a des poches, mais j'aimerais ça, un jour, que un des 4 grands fabricants de patrons collabore avec elle. Juste pour toucher un peu de son génie.

Attendez! J'ai une autre raison d'aimer cette robe. Je l'aime parce qu'elle me rappelle la robe que j'ai fait en 1975 pour obtenir mon badge de couturière chez les Guides. Tout d'un coup, j'ai une envie pressante de revisiter ce patron.

Comme si ma liste de trucs à coudre n'était pas assez longue.
