The Big Suit Take 2 / Prise 2

I don't know about you, but I can be very pigheaded.

I have had this hand woven tweed in stash for a while (another thrift shop find) and you know I greatly admire weavers, I really, really wanted to use it wisely.
How do I know it's hand made? Look at the selvedge. Somebody somewhere put his feet on the pedals and shuffled some shuttle back and forth for hours to make this. I was going to do this fabric justice come hell or high water!

Je ne sais pas vous, mais je peux être assez tête de cochon.
Ça fait un moment que j'ai ce tweed tissé à la main en stock (une autre trouvaille de chez Emmaüs) et, vous connaissez mon admiration pour les tisserands, je voulais vraiment l'utiliser à bon escient.
Comment je sais que c'est fait main? Regardez la lisière. Quelqu'un, quelque part à dansé sur ses pédales et passé une navette d'un côté à l'autre pendant des heures pour faire ça. J'allais lui faire justice contre vents et marées!

It turns out I didn't quite have enough.
Of course, I found that out a bit late in the process, I'd already made my muslin and drafted all the pattern pieces and I could just see my coat with this very fabric and there was no turning back you know? You know.

So I soldiered on and changed some design details to suit my resolve. I used some bit of silk velvet I found at the local thrift store, there is a lot of it around here to make traditional costumes, for the collar, pockets and bound buttonhole.

Bien sûr, je m'en suis rendu compte un peu tard, j'avais déjà fait ma toile et dessiné toutes les pièces de patron et je voyais ce manteau dans ma tête avec ce tissu et je ne pouvais plus reculer vous comprenez? Vous comprenez.
Alors j'ai fait au mieux avec ce que j'avais en changeant certains détails pour accommoder mon manque de tissu. J'ai utilisé le petit bout de velours de soie que j'ai trouvé chez Emmaüs, on en trouve souvent à cause des costumes bretons produits dans la région, pour les poches, le col et la boutonnière passepoilée.

I pieced the under sleeves. It's not pretty from a sewing pinpointer point of view, but hardly noticeable from anybody else's.

J'ai fait du patch pour les dessous de manche. Une couturière très pointilleuse pourrait crier au scandale mais ça ne se voit vraiment pas beaucoup.

Vous êtes toujours là? Voici la tête de manche toute nue! Avec son soutient en organza de soie coupé dans le biais, la cigarette, l'épaulette et la ouatine.

I used some serger thread tails to attach the underlining on the bottom so it doesn't move around and bunch up inside.

J'ai utilisé des chaînettes de sujeteuse pour attacher la couche du milieu en bas pour que ça ne bouge pas.

I don't know about you, but for me, there are some sewing instructions that take time to sink in due to lack of practice and some architectural spatio-temporal dyslexia, but this time, I may have cracked the vent and facing code for proper bagging.

Je ne sais pas si c'est la cas pour vous, mais parfois je bute sur certaines instructions de couture, en général, c'est par manque de pratique et à cause d'une espèce de dyslexie architecturale spatio temporelle mais cette fois ci, je crois avoir déchiffré le code pour coudre la fente et les parements d'une seule traite.

I am not going to lie to you, I'm not there yet, I will confess to having finished some bits by hand. I had a major facepalm moment when I re-read the instructions and it said that the vent is the last thing you do when bagging. Of course, I did it first, this late in the process, I didn't want to make a mistake and I had absolutely no confidence in my back vent sewing capabilities.

Je ne vous mentirai pas, je ne suis pas au vent de la bouée, j'ai du finir des petits bouts à la main.  j'ai aussi eu un grand moment de vide quand j'ai re-lu les instructions qui disaient clairement que la fente devait être cousue en dernier. (C'est quoi le terme français pour "bagging"?) Bien sur, c'est ce que j'ai fait en premier, je n'avais aucune confiance en mes capacités et je voulais pouvoir corriger. 

It made the process a tad more complicated, but hey I am not going to disown this as it looks pretty good.

J'ai bien noté que personne ne voulait des patrons de la pyramide que j'ai offert pendant que je faisais mes cadeaux de Noël. Janine And Her Amazing Collection Of Handwoven Blankets

One of my favorite places to shop when I visit my Mom is at my aunt Janine's guest bedroom.

My aunt make the most wonderful, amazing handwoven cotton dish towels on earth and I usually drop by her place to buy some as they make the most excellent gifts.

My Recycled Plastic Bags Shopping Bag

Janine weaves every day. She weaves rag blankets and rugs, dish towels, tablecloths and tablemats. It's a real pleasure to have all of this handmade linen at home and a real source of pride. In recent years, she has started weaving plastic bags to make really cool shoppers. Plastic bags you say? Yes, women in my family collect bread plastic wrappers so my aunt Janine can weave them. Once woven, they get sent out to my aunt Pauline who sews them up. How's that for recycling?

I went a little overboard this year as I didn't only take dish towels, but tablemats and a bag and some smaller stuff like this crocheted dishcloth with glitter, it's so cool!

One of the thing I'd like to do next time I go, is to spend quality time with Janine et Pauline to learn more about weaving. It's still a mystery.

Pauline The Weaver

I would like to introduce you to my Aunt Pauline's hand (I am sorry Pauline for the crummy picture!).

Pauline's hand can sew, knit, crochet, DIY, cook, repairs high voltage transformers, play with her grand-children, take care of my 98 years old grand-mother, she is the local WI secretary but, most of all, Pauline's hand weaves admirably. 

Weaving is so mysterious.

 

When I visited with her she was working on placemats and dish towels on two of her three looms (the third one is at my aunt Jeannine who also weaves) which, she offers to the members of our large family (larger than Céline Dion if you want to know!). Pauline never sells anything, she gives it away!  When she opened her wardrobe, it was brimming with plastic bags full of wonders, hours of fabulous workmanship.

  

Tablecloths, baby blankets, adult blankets, car rugs, placemats, tea towels. In Pauline's house, all the linen is handmade and generously offered. 

She gave me some tablecloth scraps, her scraps are so much more beautiful than mine! I have an idea germinating about what I am going to do with this, but it's for Christmas so sh!

Then she handed me this.

I quickly snapped a picture and then I saw her smile, "wrong side" she said.

She weaved this cloth a few years ago, with the intention of making a suit, which she never made. It's a really thick, dark blue and lilac polyester weave worthy of Chanel. Pauline said : "you have it". Emotional doesn't cover how I felt. 

I have been looking for a worthy project since then.

I would like to make a coat and I have been looking for a pattern I saw years ago. It was a long Chanel-like coat with a zipper in the front, the coat was white on the envelope, but I can't find it. Can I jog your good memory to help me find it? I will take any other suggestion as well.

Pauline La Tisserande

Je vous présente la main de ma tante Pauline (je suis désolée ma tante, la photo est mauvaise).

La main de Pauline sait tout faire. Elle coud, tricote, crochète, bricole, cuisine, joue avec ses petits enfants, répare des transformateurs pour transporter de l'électricité, prend soin de ma grand-mère qui a 98 ans, elle est secrétaire du Cercle des Fermières de sa région et surtout, la main de Pauline tisse admirablement. Le tissage c'est tellement mystérieux.

Voici ce qu'elle avait sur deux de ses trois métiers quand je suis allé la visiter (le troisième est chez mon autre tante, Jeannine qui tisse elle aussi) : des sets et des torchons qu'elle offre en cadeau aux membres de sa famille qui est très, très grande (plus grande que celle de Céline Dion!). Pauline ne vend rien, elle offre. D'ailleurs quand elle a ouvert son armoire, je ne savais plus où regarder. Empilés dans des sacs plastiques, il y avait des heures de travail fabuleux.

Des nappes, des couvertures, pour bébés, pour lits plus ou moins grands, des plaids, des napperons, des linges à vaisselle, chez Pauline, tout le linge de maison est fait main et offert généreusement.

J'ai pris les restes d'une nappe, parce que quand Pauline vous tend ses restes, c'est tellement beau, vous les prenez. J'ai une petite idée qui germe pour son utilisation, mais c'est pour Noël alors chut!...

Puis, Pauline m'a tendu ceci.

 Je l'ai photographié, je trouvais ça super beau, puis elle m'a dit en souriant : "ça, c'est l'envers". 

C'est une étoffe qu'elle a tissé il y a quelques années, pour un tailleur qu'elle n'a jamais fait. C'est du polyester marine et lilas, le tissage est digne de chez Chanel et Pauline m'a dit : "tiens, prends-le". J'ai été très émue.
Depuis, je cherche un projet digne de ce nom.
J'aimerais en faire un manteau, et, il me semble que, il y a quelques années, j'ai vu un patron de manteau à fermeture éclair style Chanel, blanc sur la pochette, et je n'arrive pas à le retrouver. J'en appelle donc à votre bonne mémoire pour le retrouver. Je prends aussi les suggestions.
